How do you make more out of the
busy holiday season? A survey reported in a recent issue of
USA Today may provide some ideas.
In a “Money Snapshot,” USA
Today reported that nearly a third of consumers said
they would be shopping for the holidays right up to the last
minute. So one option for you might be to help consumers
shop for the holidays more efficiently online at

But there’s also a
longer-lasting answer. Give some thought to why these
consumers will be shopping up until the last minute.
One reason is that they don’t
have the time to shop for the holidays earlier. Many of them
are working longer hours to cover for employees laid off or
globalized. Others of them are working longer to make up for
lesser wages in service industry jobs. And still others are
working their regular jobs plus working extra jobs to make
ends meet. That doesn’t leave a whole lot of time for
shopping.
Another reason is, many
consumers are shopping later in the holiday season because
they don’t have the money to finish it earlier. Some people
are on budgets to help them meet their monthly obligations,
so they spend a little here, a little there, week after
week, day after day, until the stores close for the holiday
weekend. Others haven’t learned to budget but they manage to
parcel out small bits of change when they can to buy for the
holidays. Still others run up large credit card debt
spending money they don’t have and worrying about paying it
off later. They may even parcel out their charges as they
make payments during the month for earlier purchases.
