earthquake and tsunami on
March 11, 2011. Amway continues that commitment by
continuing to accept donations through the
Amway.com
website. We invite you to join in
the effort by clicking on the "Donate
to Japan Relief Effort" link.
Here’s more on Amway’s response to the tragedy in
Japan:
Donations
Amway Independent Business Owners (IBOs),
employees, and customers worldwide have shown
tremendous support for Japan, with donations
exceeding the matching funds that Amway set aside.
Amway’s
Office of the Chief Executives also approved an
increase of funds from $500,000 to $1 million.
Combined donations have now exceeded $4.4 million;
these funds will be used to support the
Japanese Red Cross and other agencies on the
ground as well as long-term recovery efforts. The
funds collected by Amway IBOs in Japan have been
designated to support those IBOs affected by this
tragedy.
IBO Safety
Information regarding
Amway IBOs living in or near the affected areas has
been extremely difficult to obtain. Currently,
Amway Japan
estimates 104 IBO fatalities, 467 IBOs who have
sustained significant damage to or lost their
homes, and 416 IBOs who have been evacuated from
Fukushima. John Parker, Managing Director of Amway
Japan, reports that he and his team have completed
IBO meetings in every prefecture along the
northeastern coast that was hit by the tsunami. At
the meetings, the Amway staff has been gathering
information from the Japanese IBOs about their
downlines. This is the best update available at
this time and it will be months before Amway has
accurate totals.
Product and Component
Safety
Amway has received
numerous questions from IBOs, employees, and
affiliates regarding the continued safety of
components being supplied by Japan. Amway has
announced it will not release any products,
ingredients, or components currently in Japan
before ensuring product integrity and safety. Amway
is requiring its vendors in Japan to certify the
safety and quality of materials they provide prior
to their export from Japan. The U.S.
FDA
has also undertaken additional screening measures
at Customs for materials coming from Japan. Amway
will continue to monitor the situation in Japan and
will continue to evaluate if additional steps are
warranted to ensure product safety.
Last week, another
earthquake measuring 7.1 hit the
Sendai area, leaving
about 900,000 without power. The Japanese
government has announced that power usage will be
impacted throughout the summer months, which will
likely affect operations. Amway Japan is assessing
next steps.
