In May we told you about the U.S. Dream Academy, a
cause close to the hearts of many IBOA International
members. Today, we’re happy to report that the gala
for the U.S. Dream Academy, held May 24, raised $1.8
million, including $1 million donated by Oprah
Winfrey. Donations support academic, enrichment, and
mentoring programs for at-risk children.
According to accounts of the gala on the U.S. Dream
Academy website, more than 500 attended. They
included public figures such as Sen. Orrin Hatch,
event chair, sports figures like Washington Wizard
star Juan Dixon, Miss America 2005 Deidre Downs,
gospel recording artist Donnie McClurkin, and media
magnate Oprah Winfrey, who was also the guest
speaker. Ms. Winfrey spoke about the importance of
helping others through sharing of your time, talents
and resources. She told the crowd that everyone
cannot be famous, but all can be great when serving
and investing in others. She then presented her
check for $1 million to President and CEO of the
U.S. Dream Academy, Wintley Phipps.
The mission statement of the U.S. Dream Academy
says: “Through aggressive
and innovative academic enrichment and mentoring,
the U.S. Dream Academy is working to build the
dreams of the children of prisoners and those
failing in school; and to provide the tools that
they need to achieve their dreams."
