Amway has
long led the global
multi-level marketing (MLM) industry.
Although primarily a U.S. business when it launched in
1959, Amway has steadily opened in other countries.
Initially Amway opened in
Canada and then in
Australia, then it launched in
Europe, Asia, Southeast Asia, the Pacific, the Caribbean,
and the rest of the Americas. In 1999, Amway changed its
North American business model, operating over the Internet
through Quixtar.com.
This “i-commerce” model became so successful, Amway changed
over to it entirely in North America. In 2008, to take
maximize advantage of the Amway name, Alticor rebranded
Quixtar to
Amway Global
and rebranded it further in 2010 to Amway.
However, it has continued with the i-commerce model.
Alticor has maintained its traditional Amway model elsewhere
in the world and today, Amway does business in more than 80
countries and territories around the world - including parts
of the world considered hostile to free enterprise
when Amway first opened for business in 1959.
IBOs affiliated with Amway around the world operate
their businesses very similarly. They are able to share the
same business opportunity and offer consumers similar
products, although products may differ from country to
country. In addition, IBOs can offer the opportunity to
people in other countries where Amway is also in business.
When Amway operated in North America, before changing to
the i-commerce model in 1999, IBOs were
represented by the
Amway
Distributors Association, a trade association. Today,
the association represents IBOs affiliated with Amway and is
now known as the Independent
Business Owners Association International (IBOAI).
